Surf Instructor Courses


Training Location

All practical training will take place at Bantham beach. The theory-based training will take place at one of several prime locations within the Kingsbridge area. Information will be provided with course bookings.

International Surfing Association (ISA)SURFING GB Level 1 Surf Instructor

  • 16 years of age
  • A basic level of personal surfing competency

The Level 1 award is the minimum requirement for Surf School and Club Coaches, School Teachers and others wishing to teach the sport as ISA/SURFING GB Accredited Coaches.

Remit of ISA/SURFING GB Level 1 coaching award The Level 1 coach will be able to teach novice ABC Taster lessons autonomously.

All improver/ intermediate lessons must be conducted under the supervision of a ISA/SURFING GB Level 2 or higher coach.

In addition to the successful completion of this course a candidates will not obtain full Accreditation until they have met the following criteria.
  • Course fees paid in full
  • Hold a current NARS SLSA or RLSS Beach Lifeguard Award or NARS Surf Coaches Beach Lifeguard Award (other awards may be accepted on an individual basis)
  • Hold a Current CRB Enhanced Disclosure. The award is valid for 3 years from the date of the course taken as long as the following are maintained/updated and kept current.
  • ISA/Surfing GB Membership
  • Beach Lifeguard Award
  • CRB Enhanced Disclosure
The ISA/SURFING GB Surf Instructor Level 1 Prerequisite: A current Beach Lifeguard Qualification acceptable to ISA/SURFING GB.

At least two years personal surfing experience The ISA/SURFING GB Level 1 Coach will demonstrate that their Personal Surfing Ability is of an acceptable standard.

They will further demonstrate that they are competent to instruct surfers (on land and in the water) from Beginners (never surfed before) through to Intermediate level (able to paddle outside, catch green waves and ride right and left whilst performing basic manoeuvres).
